“I’m from California. In the States there is a lot of good people and lot of good things happening but there is still a lot of room to grow and get better.
I think it’s easier in a more “developing” country like here to do something different and new.
I wanted to live somewhere where I could grow my own food and be self sustainable as much as possible.

It’s been about six years since I first started travelling. I travelled through central america mostly.
I was 17 when I came to Nicaragua for the first time and then I came back when I was 19 and that’s when I found this place and everything started.

I came mostly to surf and to look for land to possibly farm. I studied permaculture and organic agriculture -sustainable stuff.
I met Ernesto when I come to Salinas Grandes. He was renting a room to get some money… there wasn’t much… he had the idea of doing a Hostel and I thought it was a good idea, so he said, “if you build it half is yours”.
So I built the kitchen, toilet, some more rooms… and turned it more into a hostel.

It’s been three years and now I just got my little piece of land so I’m excited to start doing what I really came here to do”.

“Soy de California. Creo que en Estados Unidos hay mucha buena gente y una cantidad de cosas buenas sucediendo pero aún hay mucho lugar para crecer y mejorar.
Igualmente creo que es más fácil hacer cosas nuevas y diferentes en un país que se está desarrollando como lo es Nicaragua.

Hace seis años desde que comencé a viajar. Más que nada viajé por centroamérica.
Vine a Nicaragua por primera vez cuando tenía 17, luego volví a los 19 y fue ahí cuando todo comenzó.

Estudié permacultura y agricultura orgánica, cosas sustentables. Vine a Nicaragua más que nada a surfar y a buscar un poco de tierra para posiblemente trabajar.
Conocí a Ernesto cuando vine a Salinas Grandes. El estaba alquilando un cuarto en su casa para hacer un poco de dinero…su casa era bastante pequeña y no había mucho más que un par de piezas… Ernesto tenía la idea de hacer un hostel y a mí me pareció una buena idea así que me dijo, “si lo construyes la mitad es tuyo”.
Así que construí la cocina, el baño y unos cuartos mas y lo convertimos más en un hostel.

Ya hace tres años desde que llegué y ahora tengo un pedacito de tierra, estoy muy emocionado de comenzar a hacer lo que realmente vine a hacer.”

 

 

 

Tamara & Bob

Tamara: “Bob and I had both been separated for several years before we met. I had more or less escaped for my nightmare in central Florida. One day I loaded up my car and my dog and went to Panama city in North Florida and find a place over there and start over again. I found an apartment next to Bob’s. It was right by the water and it was beautiful, I really felt like I had made a difference for myself.

Bob was living next door and I noticed him. I come over to his place and ask to borrow his kayak so I could show up in front of his house (laughs).

One day he had come over and somehow managed to left a note on my gate but the note caused to the latch to open and left my dogs loose. So now I had to go find my dogs! He help me out and that’s how we finally end up going on a date… We had been inseparable ever since.

For a while it was like we were living lonely next door to each other, going in the same elevator, in the same train, without knowing each other. It’s crazy.

We always wanted to travel so we started to take little trips to Ecuador and Panama. We didn’t had much money – we were travelling on pennies. But we were so happy! That’s all we wanted for so long. Being with someone that loves you and respects you and travel together”.

Bob: “In one of those trips we went up and spend a week in Washington State and we fall in love with the city. We come back, sold everything we had and move into a bus in Washington.

After three months we decided to move to Sitka – Alaska. We found a boat that we always wanted to have, it had a flat bottom instead of a V bottom – a wind boat. So we move to this little tiny town that was on an island and end up staying there for five years”.

T: “Eventually we come to live in Mexico. We sort of knew The United States wasn’t for us anymore. We weren’t happy with what we were seeing and didn’t felt we wanted to live there anymore”.

B: “We had come in many trips to Latin america and we really enjoy it so it was easy to make the decision to move here. We actually were going to move to Uruguay in the first place… we were almost there… almost”.

T: “Well who knows,  we might still make it” (laughs)

Tamara: “Bob y yo estábamos separados hacía ya varios años antes de conocernos. Yo básicamente me había escapado de lo que había sido una pesadilla de relación en Florida Central. Un día cargué mis cosas, mi perro en mi auto y me fuí a la ciudad de Panama en Florida y empecé de nuevo desde cero. El apartamento que encontré era al lado de la casa de Bob. Era un lugar hermoso estaba bien cerca del agua y realmente sentí que había hecho una diferencia en mi vida.

Bob era mi vecino y yo ya lo había visto. Así que un día fuí y le pedí prestado su Kayak así podía presumir en frente a su casa (risas)

Un dia Bob vino a dejarme una nota en mi portera pero de alguna forma la portera quedó abierta y mis perros se escaparon. Así que ahora yo tenía que ir a encontrar mis perros! El me ayudó y finalmente tuvimos una cita…  Hemos sido inseparables desde entonces.

Durante un tiempo, fue como si estuviéramos solos, uno al lado del otro, yendo en el mismo tren, en el mismo ascensor, sin conocernos. Es increíble.

Siempre quisimos viajar. Así que empezamos a hacer pequeños viajes a Ecuador y Panamá. No teníamos mucho dinero, viajabamos con centavos. Pero éramos muy felices! Eso era todo lo que quisimos durante muchísimo tiempo; estar con alguien que te ame y respete y viajar juntos”.

Bob: “En uno de esos viajes fuimos y pasamos una semana en Washingotn DC y nos enamoramos de la ciudad. Volvimos, vendimos todo lo que teníamos y nos mudamos a un Ómnibus en Washington.

Luego de tres meses decidimos mudarnos a Alaska. Encontramos un bote que siempre quisimos tener, tenía un piso plano en vez de un piso en V. Así que nos mudamos a un pequeño pueblo en una isla de Alaska y nos quedamos ahí durante cinco años”.

T: “Eventualmente nos mudamos a Mexico. De cierta manera sabíamos que Estados Unidos ya no era para nosotros. No éramos felices con lo que veíamos y sentíamos que no podíamos vivir ahí”.

B: “Varias veces habíamos ido a américa latina y siempre la pasamos muy bien, así que fue fácil tomar la decisión de mudarnos a Mexico.

En realidad, en una primera instancia nos íbamos a mudar a Uruguay… estuvimos casi allí… casi’.

T: “Bueno quien sabe, aún podríamos hacerlo!”.
